Handcraft and Design Analysis

By emphasising human creativity over base profit motives, handmade things beg us to like them and their creators – which is why art, design, fashion, mass-manufactured goods and even pop culture are pitching themselves to consumers with a thick, reassuring dollop of the handmade.

In an uncertain economic climate, handmade things have acquired virtuous new connotations of resourcefulness and thrift, but the handmade aesthetic is actually far more about luxury than paucity, especially a luxury of time. style of many self-consciously handmade things also harks back to childhood, the relation between the handmade and imagination.

the intangibility of digital culture that makes “handwashed” products so wholesome and reassuring. Fetishising handmade things is a tiny protest against the tyrannical consumer cycle of newness and obsolescence. But ultimately, it’s just another kind of consumerism.

Small producers are trying to make money from their handiwork at weekend markets, in niche boutiques, and through websites such as Georgie Love and Etsy.

Produced with a limited edition by London-based branding agency, to stimulate the consumer’s eye and attract them to buy it. This “Winter Warmer” cozy handmade packaging designed by London-based agency is begging us, as an essential for the holiday and festive season. The packaging design is using fabrics which has connotations to homeness, cottage feelings with family and friends gathering during winter time, around a fireplace.

Colourful, playful and stark combination of patchwork, stitching and three-dimensional synthetic feather and buds; trying to make it a unique design without any reference to marketing the product, and to emphasise creativity over base profit motives (Campbell, 2009). Moreover, as common in contemporary design, this packaging has been handcrafted as to influence the consumers aesthetics, but it is actually a form of luxury. The wrapper fabrics and the glass bottle, both textures do not acquire a unified sense of communication, it is merely a fashionable style. For that reason, the product has been advertised on a well-known packaging site, the Dieline web page.

The advertiser has exaggerated their communication message trying to sell the wine bottle, stating that; buying this wrapper will keep your special bottle at the convenient temperature. It is inappropriate statement, specially; if someone wants to sell an authentic handmade piece and emphasis creativity. I personally find that inconvenient. Therefore, this handcraft falling under the “Handwashing” definition as Campbell stated in the article (Campbell, 2009).
