Description
The knowledge pack is conceived as an inspiring learning journey centred on the mysterious migration of the Bogong moth. The design narrates this natural phenomenon through packaging as a storytelling medium, evoking the forces that guide the moths—the magnetic field and visual cues—as core design concepts.
The packaging explores how Bogong moths navigate routes toward the alpine caves of Victoria, translating this remarkable instinct into visual motifs, textures, and structural design choices. Form and graphics highlight direction, flow, and orientation, reflecting the moth’s migration journey and its survival purpose.
Scientific findings on navigational behaviour—shaped by magnetic sensitivity and visual cues—are interpreted into layered design elements. Colour contrasts, symbolic patterns, and structural layouts are used to create narrative-driven packaging that informs and inspires.
The packaging is both functional and educational, using hierarchy, readability, and storytelling to capture the Bogong moth’s migration for survival as a compelling narrative. This approach transforms packaging into a medium that communicates knowledge, enhances engagement, and delivers a memorable design experience.
Deliverables
- Narrative-driven packaging prototypes with visual and structural concepts.
- A cohesive design system including graphics, typography, and material selection.
- Documentation of design rationale linking scientific insights to visual outcomes.
Impact Outcomes
- Created packaging that educates as well as protects, embedding storytelling into design.
- Enhanced audience engagement by aligning natural science with creative design.
- Positioned packaging as a medium of cultural and scientific storytelling, reinforcing its role beyond functionality.
