Project 1: Conceptual Thinking
Technically, dictionary is the main source of word definition, by which adjectives may reveal some inspiring ideas, and provide meanings that can be drawn from. What does it mean ‘word definition’?
Is it true that dictionaries are the only reference source to definitions? The reason why, I am asking these questions is the fact, that I need to explore a meaning beyond the word itself. A word meaning that can be visually interpreted and stand out, with no reference to any dictionary and, by drawing the spiritual of the word I will be able to explore its meaning.
I decide to draw ‘The mature’ ‘Mature’ ‘Maturity’, and to develop my conceptual thinking based on my visual interpretations of the word meaning.
I imagined, time and places, of my past life have been infatuated beyond measures, and suddenly, growing up as the trigger to every fleeting moment of my bounded experience. As Goya, visualises the time, as a giant eating his children at Saturn eats his own. Hamlet comes to confess that he wasted too much time and now time wasted him. I, therefore; want to visualise my ‘Maturity’ as, a moment of truth in my vast bounded human endeavors would be enough to explode my fragile and weak nature as human.
It is to consider the untouched heavenly hunger of hunting the moments that had passed away, and of the future that, is coming; to only leaving me with passion, energy and energise my whole.
I imagined ‘Mature’ as, the vast beat of a drum, a powerful move of Flamenco Dancer or, perhaps, a Matador. It is the sacred burst of time and an incomparable ecstasy of curves, counterpoints and speed.
Original Inspiration: Mature – Charcoal drawing on paper
The visual outcome of my original drawing was unexpected, this charcoal drawing inspired me, to unfold the meaning of ‘Mature’, and visualise the rhythm of the form, shape and gesture.
But, how this drawing will inform my concept to develop a letterform that would best contribute to express the meaning of the word ‘Mature’?
How would I explore a letterform that match or impact the word ‘Mature’?
Do I select a typeface that had curved, straight, geometric or uneven lines?
I find that ideal will come from experimenting with my drawing, further; I decide to scan the original drawing and focus on some of its details. Details as head and shoulder gesture, hands and fingers movements, in contrast to the whole-body shape, that suggests forming a letter. Therefore, scanned copy of my original drawing, and cropping a few sections to get to the details that match the structure of my letterform, and the texture of its material, will help to develop my concept
My drawing ‘Mature Details’ analyse the visual interpretation of the word meaning, without referring to a dictionary. ‘Mature’ is “The transformation of a unique stage in life, to be Elaborate, Concise, Considerate and Honest, ‘Mature’, as the energetic move toward ‘Elegance’ and ‘Truth”.
How would I explore a letterform that match or impact the word ‘Mature’?
Having a close to my drawing details, mind mapping becomes central to unpack the question, and approach the initial idea to the letter form.

How the explored meaning informs the selection of a Typeface?
I realised that, an Art Deco or Expressionism Typeface will be the ideal to reflect the contrast and balance between bold and thin strokes that reveal, Energy, hope, movement and Jazz impact. The Typeface must suggest curved, clean and harmonious typographic effect.
I think to experiment further with the Art Deco and Expressionism Typefaces.
Initial typeface Inspiration: Art deco – Expressionism
