Typography – Week 7

Project 3 – Body and Soul

Based on week 6  brief and suggested process, I read through the brief and suggested process would be the fresh good start. But where to begin?

I find, that is, central to the process is to read the copy The Language of Letters (Body)

Understanding the text intent is vital, to the selection for a layout that reflecting the spirit of that body and, then, the typeset of my chosen page example would faithfully reflects an existing page layout (the soul). I guess, it is two way process, however, not any layout can be chosen for the original text.

The original text (body) written by Max Kisman, and is about his journey in education as a Typographer. Additionally, his design philosophy is well presented and dictated. After reading the original text many times, I come up with some thoughts (Brain Storming) that will guide the process of choosing any publication design layout (Soul).

The main criterion for suitability is that it is considered to be an example of ‘good typesetting practice’, and it demonstrates use of multiple levels of typographic hierarchy. But not limited to that, it has to create the matching boundaries for the text.

What layout is?

How it will reflect the Body?

Mind Map

To narrow the selection of my layout, I mind map some basic ideas of what I believe it will assist the searching process, among huge amount of publication designs. just to come up with imagination of what could be the layout, I am searching.

To certain extent, my mind map target keywords from the text, and how a certain layout would reflect it. I come up with a list of layouts to target:

  • Interactive mood between elements, artistic and conceptual (art magazines, artists books, design books, etc)
  • Inspiring layout which contains Typographical well designed sound.
  • Contains multiple levels of hierarchies and demonstrate typography principles skills.
  • Informal, not just Essay or research article layout.
  • Visually appealing, eye catching and illustrative.
  • Motivate and visually inspiring to communicate the author’s message, and to fit his main view. It is a journey through Typography.

I think I can not fit a clown in a businessman suite, can we?

I need to research the suitable suite for the author’s message to communicate, and to make this layout give soul to his body.
